Each year, employment legislation is updated to take account of inflation. On 14 March 2023, The Employment Rights (Increase of Limits) Order (Northern Ireland) 2023 was passed.

The Order increases, from 6 April 2023, limits applicable to certain awards and payments under employment rights legislation in Northern Ireland in line with the Retail Prices Index, for example:

  • Limit on amount of compensatory award for unfair dismissal increases from £94,063 to £105,915;
  • Maximum amount of “a week’s pay” for the purpose of calculating a redundancy payment or for various awards including the basic award of compensation for unfair dismissal increases from £594 to £669
  • Limit on amount of guarantee payment payable to an employee in respect of any day increases from £31 to £35
